Chair Tilt mechanism is the connection between the office cylinder and the seat.

Nowaday more and more elements about the comfort and ergonomics are added in the design of office chairs. Among them, the synchro tilt mechanism is one of the outstanding elements.

But before we discuss the synchro tilt mechanism, let’s talk about and review the chair tilt mechanism first. 

1. Brief introduction of the Chair Tilt Mechanism

If you compare an ergonomic office chair to a person, then the tilt mechanism is like its brain, which controls the movement of the entire chair.

The multifunctional tilt mechanism can not only assist the cylinder to raise or lower chair height, but also connect the seat and backrest to control their relative angles. Some of them can even be connected to the chair armrests for reinforcement.

The center point position in the seat of the tilt mechanism also plays a very important role in the movement. And it decides the results of the problems like the following list:

(1) Is it easy to roll forward when you lean forward?

(2) Is it easy to flip backward when you lean back?

(3) Is it easy to shake when you lean to the left and right?

(4) Is the force uneven?

1.1 Different Types of Chair Tilt Mechanism

Different types of office chairs carry different functions.

Although the tilt mechanism is installed under the seat, it is not easy to appear in the people’s view, but in all the chair components, it plays a main role to realise the different functions of the office chair.

There are mainly 4 kinds of mechanisms:

Swivel tilt mechanism,

Knee tilt mechanism,

Synchronic tilt mechanism,

Multi-function tilt mechanism.

And each tilt mechanism is realizing one or more functions.

2. Synchro Tilt Mechanism - the new star

Among all the mechanisms we use, the synchro tilt mechanism is the most popular among modern ergonomic office chairs. 

Like all other mechanisms, its main raw material is iron, with a thickness of 2.0mm, 2.5mm, and 3.0mm or more for main body.

Different from other mechanisms, it has aluminum alloy brake parts inside it, which is lightweight, more durable and more stable, and a tail iron plate that links the back of the chair, a very thick reinforced tail plate, and three or more screws.

As shown in the figure below, the part circled in red is the synchro tail plate.

The working principle of the synchronous tilt mechanism:

Tilt the seat pan and the backrest at the same time.

The chair tilts at a ratio of 2 : 1 inclination of the backrest to the tilt of the seat plate.

For example, every 10 degrees of the back tilt, the seat pan tilts for 5 degrees.

The minimal seat tilt allows your feet to rest on the ground while you lean.

The people will feel more comfortable when sitting on the chair with this movement.

We can know from the above Mechanisms, the functions of synchronic tilt mechanism include :

3.1 Functions of Synchro Tilt Mechanism

(1) Seat height adjustment

The tilt mechanism has a specific lever for height adjusting.

  • To increase the chair height, you need to get up from the chair and lift the lever. Then, the seat will be lifted. When it is increased to the desired height, you can release the lever.
  • To decrease the seat height, you need to sit on the chair and move the lever down at the same time. Then, release it at the desired level.

(2) Seat and back angle locking

The seat and back angles will move together as you move until you lock the angle into the desired position.

Pull up the lever, select a suitable tilt position, and release.

Next, push down the lever and lean back on the chair to release the mechanism for unrestricted movement.

(3) Seat and back spring tension adjustment

The seat and back spring tension adjustment is generally realized by using a knob or a lever. This function works is cooperation with people’s weight.

More tension is needed for a heavier while less for a lighter person.

If the tension is set wrongly for users’ weight or height, they may feel uncomfortable tilting backward.

It is also possible that you have the reverse problem and cannot tilt at all.

The seat and back spring tension adjustments allow people to set the tension right and make them recline comfortably.

4. When Sitting on a Synchro -Tilt Mechanism chair

4.1 Tilt function-Tilt Mechanism chair

First of all, the “Tilt” function allows people to tilt back or forward with the movement of the chair.

While the “Tension” function allows people to change the tilt force. The tension can be adjusted by the mechanism to suit your weight and the desired sitting posture.

The adjustment “tipping point” is actually the “point” at which the thrust of the chair equals people’s weight.

5. Synchro tilt VS Swivel tilt

5.1 The differences between synchro tilt and swivel tilt

The same as synchro tilt, swivel tilt also has the functions of seat height adjustment and seat & back spring tension adjustment.

However, the swivel tilt can’t be active in locking the seat and back angle as the synchro tilt. 

Accordingly, the synchro tilt can be seen as an advanced and upgraded version for the swivel tilt.

2. Difference in Function

(1) With the swivel tilt mechanism NG003B, one can only make the seat and back tilt with their weight while they are leaning back. But the inclination angle of the seat and back cannot be fixed.

(2) While the synchro tilt mechanism NG012D can realize the locking of seat and back in 4 angle degrees as the below picture shows. What’s more, the tilting angle of seat and back is roughly in the ratio of 1:2.
