Office Chair Tilt Tension: A Way To Reduce Back Pain

Today, the office furniture industry has introduced many office chairs that incorporate a variety of unique ergonomic and supportive features. Only a small Tilt Tension component on the Chair Tilt Mechanism has a very important ergonomic effect.

However, most users rarely adjust the office chairs according to their specific needs. Because they probably don’t know how these parts work, or even don’t know where the adjustments are at all!

We, as a office chair parts manufacturer, feel it is our responsibility to make the chair tilt tension much clear to the office chair users. Next, let’s learn about what is tilt tension first.

About Tilt Tension and why is it necessary?

One study has found a significant positive relationship between the total sitting time (hourly) and the back pain intensity. But in most time, It’s not allowed to stand up or move around regularly working in an office. In such situation, the functions of an office chair which can solve this problem seem quite important and necessary. And Tilt Tension is one of them, because one of the most beneficial features of any office chair is actually the “tilt tension” feature.

First, the Tiltfeature allows you to lean back or forward on the chair with the chair following your movements. While the Tensionfunction allows you to adjust the force required for the tilt. Overall, the tilt tension feature essentially allows you to decide how much you want to tilt the chair, and how much force is required to do so.

Reclining Office Chair

How does the Tilt Tension work?

The tilt tension mechanism actually works by adjusting the tension to suit your body weight and accustomed sitting position. This is called your “tipping point“.

And this “point” is where the chair exerts a thrust whose force is equal to your body weight on you! So when you’re sitting, normally you’ll feel like you’re being held by the chair, rather than being pushed by the chair.

Ideally, with enough tension, you should be able to lean back just with your toes pushing back slightly, and the chair will follow you as you sit forward.

By adjusting the Tilt Tension, you can move throughout the day while sitting on the chair. This is one of the main advantages of the reclining function in an ergonomic chair, which allows for healthy sitting with activity while providing continuous support throughout the movement.

How does the Tilt Tension reduce the back pain?

It is often thought that the key to managing low back pain is to use a chair with a ridge, but the best solution is a chair that is supportive when you move! The more physical movements you get, the more you can profit from the increased blood circulation and redistribution of pressure on your back during the workday.

By making slight and regular postural changes, the pressure is evenly distributed over your entire body, increasing the time you can sit comfortably while working. To realize of this state, a very large part depends on the function of Tilt Tension on chair tilt mechanism.

How to adjust the Tilt Tension?

The adjustment of the tilt tension needs to be based on the height and weight of the individual. The video above shows us a way to adjust the tilt tension using our multifunction tilt mechanism.

Taller/heavier people tend to require tighter tilt tension. Conversely, for a shorter/lighter person, lighter controls are needed. Everyone’s body is different, and it takes a little time to try to find a tilt tension that suits your height and weight.

If the tilt tension is set too light for an individual, your back may be unsupported when you sit in the chair and fall back when you lean back. On the contrary, if the tension is set too tight, you may not be able to recline the chair at all. So the tilt tension setting should have enough and proper tension.

3 Common Tilt Tension Adjustment Positions

As for the adjustment position of Tilt Tension, it is generally at the tension knob or the control lever (crank) of the chair tilt mechanism. Generally, the tension knob or the crank are marked with the direction of tension, as shown in the three pictures below. Users can adjust according to the instructions.

Conclusion

For people who have to work in the office for a long time, an office chair with tilt tension adjustment function is the most practical and long-term solution to reduce back pressure and pain.
