What Are the 5 Common Office Chair Tilt Mechanism Adjustments?

Compared to office chairs of the past, most office chairs available today are characterized by a variety of ergonomics and support features or functional improvements.

And the top ergonomic computer chairs or task chairs manufactured seem to have more levers and office chair adjustment functions than small planes.

For those who own or plan to buy basic to mid-range office chairs, this article may help you choose or operate office chairs.

Adjustments realized by lever

The following is the information and drawing of one chair tilt mechanism, in which there are three levers: A, B, C and Knob

Each can realize the different functions of the tilt mechanism.

  • Lever B for tilting the seat for certain degree
  • Lever C for locking back bar at any degree
  • Tension knob for adjusting the height of the chair back
  • Angle range of seat : 3°-6°
  • Angle range of back : 85°-115°

Now, Let’s see how to use this kind of tilt mechanism.

Then, we will explain the 5 Common Adjustments that can realized by the tilt mechanisms one by one:

1. Height Adjustment of Pneumatic Seat

Most offices, computers, task, ergonomic, and even executive chairs provide this function. Quite simply, this is about how the seat height is raised or lowered.

An pneumatic cylinder is connected to the chair mechanism located under the seat cushion. The cylinder allows quick and easy adjustments within the specified height range.

This adjustment is usually done by using paddles or levers located under the seat cushions on the right or left side of the chair.

2. Tilt with Adjustable Tilt Tension

Sometimes, manufacturers may describe tilt and tilt tension adjustment as two separate functions. We find that these office chair controls are closely related. And only when they are set together, can they act as one function.

Most types of task chairs, computer chairs and executive chairs have a tilt function which can adjust the tilt tension.

Tilt is what allows the user to swing or lean back to the set limit defined by the chair mechanism or control panel.

The tilt tension adjustment can be modified by turning the usual larger circular knob under the seat towards the front of the chair. (Some chair manufacturers move the tilt tension control to a lever or dial elsewhere on the chair, but most are still at the front.) The tilt tension knob will increase or decrease the force required to swing or tilt the chair backward.

Generally, it is necessary to turn the tilt tension knob several times to loosen or tighten the tension to a significant level.

3. Tilt Lock

This function isn’t as simple as it sounds, and a great many people have difficulty with this.

One of the problems with tilt locking is that some manufacturers may use different levers or place the lever in different areas to control this function. And that results in the chair tilt locking adjustment that can be modified in many ways. The best practice to help you become familiar with the specific controls of the chair is always to consult your chair user manual.

Generally, some manufacturers may use levers or paddles (such as levers or paddles for seat height adjustment) to control the tilt lock. Or many manufacturers use a single lever or rod that needs to be pushed in or pulled out to lock or unlock the tilt of the chair.

Besides, once the chair is locked in the tilt position, it cannot be unlocked. Unless the user reclines or tilts a few degrees back to further release the pressure from the lock lever or pin.

So that the chair can be reset back to the original position. The tilt lock is also used to completely lock the tilt when the chair is in the upright position.

4. (2-to-1) Synchro Tilt

Many computer chairs and task chairs provide synchro tilt function.

Essentially, this office chair control allows the backrest to tilt at twice the speed of the seat cushion or at a ratio of 2 to 1.

And that also allows the user to tilt while keeping the seat relative to the floor, instead of the traditional “rocking chair” type recline.

5. Back Height Adjustment

Many computer chairs, task chairs, ergonomic chairs, and drafting chairs now provide this feature.

The backrest height adjustment enables the user to position the lumbar support area of the backrest within a fixed range to achieve customized support.

This adjustment is usually modified by turning a shaft located on the backrest rod or frame.

After releasing the knob, the backrest can be raised or lowered to the desired position. And then tighten the knob to maintain that position.

The ratchet backrest height adjustment has become more and more popular in some newer models of office chairs.

There is no need to use the knob, just raise or lower the backrest to the desired level to set or control, and then use the ratchet style frame stem to lock it in place.

Of course, there are many other chair functions available on the market. Depending on your personal preferences, the time you spend sitting on the chair each day, and your intended use, you may need or want an office chair with more ergonomic controls or functions.
